Meta has decided to drop support of WhatsApp on older Androids. Older Androids will not support WhatsApp from January 1, 2025. Android phones that are 10 years old will not support WhatsApp anymore. Moreover, 10 years old Androids are still using Android KitKat. Androids that are still using Kitkat OS or any older OS, will not have access to WhatsApp anymore. Users should upgrade their devices to the newer ones. Meta will give support to Androids running OS 5.0 and newer.
The reason for this decision is that Meta is upgrading WhatsApp’s features and functionalities. Meta is about to add more features like AI functionalities, security features, upgraded end-to-end encryption, etc., that require more stable and modern hardware. Furthermore, there’s a list of mobile phones that are going to drop Meta Support:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
If any of you are still using any of these devices, you will lose your data so, you must back up your WhatsApp data and move it to a newer mobile. The drop support of WhatsApp will be applied on January 1, 2025.
Meta announced something for iPhones as well. The iPhones that are using iOS 12 or lower will not support Meta.
